Moving Checklist

8 Weeks Before Moving

The earlier you start, the smoother your move will be. Trust us, future-you will be grateful.

  • Create a moving binder or folder to keep all your important documents together
  • Research moving companies and get at least three quotes
  • Start decluttering room by room – donate, sell, or toss items you no longer need
  • Begin using up pantry items and freezer food

6 Weeks Before Moving

Things are getting real now. Time to tackle the paperwork.

  • Notify your landlord (if renting) or schedule your closing date
  • Book your moving company or reserve a rental truck
  • Start collecting boxes and packing supplies
  • Arrange time off work for moving day

4 Weeks Before Moving

The countdown is on. Start packing the stuff you rarely use.

  • Begin packing non-essential items (seasonal decor, books, guest room)
  • Notify important parties of your address change: bank, employer, subscriptions
  • Schedule utility disconnection at your old place and connection at the new one
  • Forward your mail through USPS
  • Transfer or find new doctors, dentists, and veterinarians if needed

2 Weeks Before Moving

The finish line is in sight. Keep that momentum going.

  • Confirm details with your moving company
  • Pack a suitcase with essentials for the first few days (toiletries, phone chargers, change of clothes)
  • Clean out your refrigerator and plan meals around what’s left
  • Return borrowed items and collect anything you’ve lent out
  • Arrange care for kids or pets on moving day

Moving Week

Almost there! Focus on the final details.

  • Finish packing and label all boxes clearly by room
  • Take photos of electronics setups before unplugging
  • Prepare an envelope with cash for tips and last-minute expenses
  • Do a final walkthrough of your old home
  • Read all meters and document their readings

Moving Day

The big day is here. You’ve got this.

  • Be present to answer questions from movers
  • Do a final sweep of every room, closet, and cabinet
  • Lock up and hand over keys
  • Check that utilities are working at your new place
  • Unpack essentials first and order pizza – you’ve earned it

After You Move

Congratulations on your new home! A few final touches:

  • Update your driver’s license and vehicle registration
  • Register to vote at your new address
  • Meet your neighbors – a friendly wave goes a long way
  • Locate your new home’s main water shutoff and electrical panel
  • Change the locks or rekey them for peace of mind
